New Definitions
In his final night with his disciples, Jesus washes their feet and shares a meal with them. His new commandment is not really new, but a new way to connect with him through their care for each other and the world. His act of service redefines the meaning of ‘master’ ‘teacher’, servant.’ When he is ‘lifted up’ on the cross, ‘glorified’ in the words of the evangelist, he will return to the Father, whence he came to bring us God’s saving upheaval of the power of evil and death. Jesus resurrection will put the seal on this work forever.
