“The Heavens proclaim the glory of God,
and the firmament shows forth the work of God’s hands.
“Day unto day takes up the story
and night unto night makes known the message.
No speech, no word, no voice is heard
yet their span extends through all the earth,
their words to the utmost bounds of the world.”
Psalm 19:1-5
Days are getting shorter, nights are colder. It’s time; time for flannel pajamas and the heavier duvet; time for turning the heater back on and closing all the windows at night. Kind of a sad time for me, as I love the long, hot days of summer – the open shoes with turquoise toenails, and sitting on the patio for breakfast and long into the night.
As much as I complain that summer’s over, I love the change of the seasons. I know that it’s an accurate reflection of what life is like. With every joyful beginning comes an ending. With every receiving comes a letting go. Our scripture tells us that death is followed by resurrection, and that God is with us in every change, in every turn of leaf and rising of stem. Our faith informs even our ability to trust that every loss can bring something worthwhile, and that maybe even something beautiful is in store for us because our lives are in God’s hands.
The God we worship is a God who provides beauty all around us as part of the promise that love never ends. So even as we say goodbye to summer, we greet the beauty of fall. Even as we hunker down for the cold of winter, we know that we will open again into Spring. God speaks all around us of love and life and promise.
